I’m Alan Bell, a Red Seal Certified Locksmith, and this trade runs in the family. My dad taught me, and today I lead a team of my own. How fast can you get to me? In most of Richmond, Vancouver, Surrey, and Burnaby, our emergency locksmith response time is 15 to 30 minutes because our technicians live across the region, not just near one shop.
1. How much is the average locksmith charge?
How much does a locksmith cost in Richmond, BC?
It depends on what you need and when you need it. A lockout on a Tuesday afternoon costs a lot less than a lock change on Christmas night. These are our actual prices at CaptainLock Locksmith, in Canadian dollars.
Service call
- $59 on regular weekdays
- From $95 after hours and on weekends
- Up to $299 on major holiday evenings like Christmas and Thanksgiving
Lockouts
- House lockout: $90 – $250, depending on the lock
- Car lockout: $50 – $100 for most vehicles. If the keys are stuck in the trunk, or the job takes closer to an hour, expect $190 – $250.
Rekeying and lock changes
- Rekey at our shop: $29 – $90 per lock
- Rekey at your place: $195 covers the service call, the first lock and 2 keys. Each extra lock is $29 – $90.
- Lock change: $95 – $250 per standard lock
- High-security locks: from $250
- Keypad and smart locks: from $299
- High-security lock installation: $250 – $500
Key cutting (walk-in at our Richmond shop)
- Standard keys: $1 – $10
- Non-standard and high-security keys: from $20
Travel and disposal
- No travel charge anywhere in Greater Vancouver. Outside Greater Vancouver, we charge for travel time.
- We take old locks and hardware away at no cost. Doors and other large items that need a special disposal site are charged by weight and material.
What you can count on
For emergency calls, we’re usually at your door in 15–30 minutes. If we can’t fix the problem, you pay the service call and nothing else. Every job comes with at least a 90-day warranty, and bigger jobs are covered for 1 year or more. We’re licensed in BC and open 24/7.

2. Where exactly is your Richmond shop?
Our shop is at 11780 River Rd, Unit 175A, Richmond, BC V6X 1Z7. It’s a real walk-in storefront, not just a dispatch address, so you can come in for key cutting, lock rekeying, or to talk to us in person.
How to find us:
- Drive north on No. 5 Road all the way to the end.
- At the T-intersection near Richmond Sport and Fitness, turn left onto River Road.
- Drive about 250 metres and turn left into the large commercial complex.
- Our shop is in the first building in front of you, on the left side.

3. Do I need an appointment for key cutting?
We recommend booking ahead. A quick message first saves you a wasted trip.
The easiest way is to send us a photo of the key you want copied, or of the lock that needs repair. We’ll check that we have the right key blank or parts in stock. If it’s a less common key, we’ll order it and can usually cut it for you the next day.
We cut house keys, mailbox keys, file cabinet keys and padlock keys while you wait.

4.What should I ask a locksmith before hiring?
What should I ask a locksmith before hiring?
A few quick questions on the phone can save you from surprise fees and damaged locks:
- “What’s the total price?” Get the full amount up front, including the service call, labour and parts. If they can’t give an exact price before seeing the job, at least get the service call fee and a rough estimate.
- Does the deal sound too good to be true? Then it’s probably a scam. Don’t forget, a locksmith business is like any other business, with lots of expenses: advertising, vehicles, gas, shop bills, tools, parts, salaries, taxes and more. It can’t be $19, $29, $35 or $50. The minimum for a mobile call from any legit locksmith starts from $100, and even that barely covers the expenses.
- “Is there an extra charge for nights, weekends or holidays?” Rates often change after hours, so ask before they drive out.
- “Are you licensed in BC?” Locksmiths in BC need a security worker licence. A real locksmith will show you their licence card, and you can check any licence on the BC government website.
- “Do you have a real local address?” Some companies use a local phone number but send someone from far away. A real shop you can visit means someone is accountable.
- “Will you need to drill my lock?” A skilled locksmith can open most locks without damaging them. If someone wants to drill right away, ask why.
- “Do you give a warranty?” A good locksmith stands behind their work.
